Our Mission

What is an allomother?

al·lo·moth·er

/ˈa-lō-ˌmə-tʓər/ · noun · anthropology

Anyone other than a parent who helps care for a child — a grandparent, a neighbor, a mentor, a friend.

For nearly all of human history, children were raised by villages. Grandmothers, aunts, uncles, neighbors, and friends shared the everyday work of care — anthropologists call them allomothers, and they are one of the oldest reasons our species thrives.

Modern life has quietly dismantled that village. Today, millions of parents carry everything alone. Allomothers.org exists to rebuild what was always meant to be shared: we connect families with trained volunteers, mentors, and neighborhood networks, so that support is a community norm — not a stroke of luck.

Communities have always raised children together. We make it possible again.

How It Works

Three gentle steps to a fuller village

Reach Out

Tell us a little about your family and what would help — a mentor for your kid, a hand with school runs, or simply another adult who shows up. It takes five minutes, and it's always free.

Get Matched

Our local coordinators pair you with vetted, trained volunteers and nearby families whose rhythms fit yours. Every match is made by a person, never just an algorithm.

Build Your Village

Support grows into relationship. Shared meals, standing check-ins, community gatherings — over time, your matches become the village your family can lean on for good.

Real Stories

The village, in their words

After my husband deployed, I was doing bedtime, bills, and everything in between alone. Now Miss Dara comes every Tuesday. My daughter calls her our fairy grandmother.

I thought I was signing up to help a family. Two years later, they're at my table every Sunday. I didn't just join a village — I got one.

James O.
Volunteer allomother

As a single dad new to the city, I didn't know a soul. My village showed up with school-run help, birthday cakes, and people who genuinely know my son's name.

You are not alone. Not anymore.

Whether you need a village or want to be one, it starts with a single, simple hello. We’ll take it from there — gently, and together.
